Midwest Malinois

My trip to Kansas City last year changed my life. I had recently just gotten out of a four-year relationship and was living alone in large house by myself. I have a severe anxiety disorder which caused me to feel unsafe and rarely sleep. Before my trip, I had spent close to a year researching Malinois breeders; I knew I had found the right one.

Kevin and Joyce Felts (Midwest Malinois) took the time to make sure I was educated on the breed and that the puppy would be going to a loving and “well-prepared” home. When I arrived in Kansas City, Kevin and Joyce were amazing hosts! I was given a tour of Kansas City and taken to a local “favorite” for dinner. They made sure I spent enough time with the puppies to know which one I felt was a great match for me; I immediately connected with Senna. I knew I was a goner as soon as she wrapped her little paws around my ankles and stared up at me with her big brown eyes.

I searched for four years for a Malinois breeder! As a former military Working dog K9 handler/caretaker, I was specifically looking for temperament, form to function, and working ability. I had about given up searching when a friend of mine told me about a kennel he found called Midwest Malinois. And that was the beginning.

Kevin called me after I filled out the puppy questionnaire. We spoke on the phone so many times (and at GREAT length) – I can’t even remember how many times we talked. Kevin knew exactly what I was looking for! I told Kevin to pick out a puppy from the January 2010 Bridget/Bullet litter for me, SIGHT UNSEEN! I had grown to trust Kevin’s judgment and his immense knowledge of the breed and his own breeding program. I never knew if he had picked out a male or female puppy for me till I got the puppy; it just didn’t matter.

Where do I begin? As a child, I had so many pets that I was completely adamant about NOT having any pets as an adult. I purposely turned myself off to even the most adorable pets because I didn't want the responsibility.

Well, life changes..........I got married to a man who has been begging for a dog for over 5 years. One day, a little over a year ago, my husband told me about a breed of dog that he was extremely interested in. A couple of his friends are police officers who informed him of the Belgian Malinois. Ever since that day, he has been NAGGING me to get one.

"When I got Shay, I took him to my vet for a well-puppy visit and not only did he get a clean bill of health, but the whole clinic wanted to come out to see this beautiful puppy.

Shay was a hit with the vet and staff and he wins the hearts of everyone who meets him.

He is truly a blessing. He is always so happy and attentive, not to mention awesome! My German shepherd (Casey) loves him. He has a new friend and together they are a handful to say the least!"

MW Malinois Billy Bob (2006) is working doing his drug detection every day. He is growing up to be an exceptional drug dog. Always finding contraband where they think it's safe. What a good boy.

"We love our Belgian Malinois puppy, "Fia." Fia is high energy and ball and Frisbee crazy.

That's exactly what we wanted since we are dog trainers and take our dogs with us everywhere. At a moments notice, Fia is ready to perform.

At 8 months old, she recently took 2nd place out of 22 dogs in her first Frisbee competition. She is a blast to watch.

Mom likes to play with her. Everyone does get along. She does get a little high strung in the house at times, but we make it.

"We added a new addition to our family, a Belgian Shepherd from “Midwest Malinois”. My husband had wanted a Malinois for two years.

I had done some research on the web and found that it was very important to have a well-socialized puppy with excellent breeding. This was very important since the new puppy would be joining our established family pets.

I filled out the puppy questionnaire on the “Midwest Malinois” website and within 24 hours I received a phone call from Kevin Felts."

"I hope you and Joyce are doing well. I had to write to tell you about this pup. I’ve had him for a month and he is everything I expected, and more.

I asked for a high drive, fearless pup and that is exactly what I received. I didn’t ask for this weirdo, bite/grab/ ”hey, human, you are coming with me”; but we are working on that. I keep waiting to see what exactly scares this dog.

I joked that the dog was hard of hearing because he didn’t budge in his carrier on the plane ride home. I had to stick my toe in his kennel to make sure he was still alive because he was so quiet. As it turns out, he can hear perfectly well. He thinks it’s funny when I whisper his commands, and prefers to work for his food vs eating out of a full bowl, which to him is boring."

Cassey, KNOWS, for her age...Wait (whoa), Here, Sit, Platz, Name, and a few hand signals I use. She’s pretty reliable on these commands. No force, just trust & bonding well.

"Tess is a 21-month-old female Belgian Malinois from Midwest Malinois. She comes from a litter of good stock, Bridget and Bullet. She is a wilderness Search and Rescue (SAR) dog being crossed-trained in cadaver search.

Our story starts with my friend and trainer, Mike, who owns five Malis . He said, “If you want the epitome of a working dog, get a Mal.” I connected with Midwest Malinois and found Tess. I brought her home on Labor Day weekend in 2006 and we started to bond, build trust, and play tug.

At six months of age, I took Tess to Arizona to start her formal training in search and rescue with Mike and she learned her alert (bump) and the foundation blocks for SAR work. Mike was so impressed with Tess that he came from Arizona to Missouri to get Tess’s sister, Sarah. My trainer, Stacy, states that Tess will be her claim to fame in SAR. Stacy has a male Malinois she is also training for SAR work."
